The Gloucester Old Spot is an established favourite on Bristol’s dining scene that’s popular with couples, families and groups of friends alike. Situated in Horfield, within easy reach of bustling Gloucester Road, the independent pub sparks joy with a cosy and quirky interior, a colourful and spacious beer garden and an exquisite food and drink offering that covers all bases.

We visited on a warm, sunny day and were delighted to find the expansive windows at the back folded away to allow the breeze and friendly chatter of al fresco diners to contribute to the relaxed atmosphere. We sipped large glasses of the refreshing house white and ordered a few nibbles to start. Fresh bread with confit garlic butter whet our appetite perfectly, as did the pork crackling with homemade apple and cider sauce. For my main course, I plumped for the summery spanakopita – Greek-style pastry filled with warm feta, goat’s cheese and spinach – served with a beautifully fresh salad of candy beetroot, asparagus, peas and rocket dressed with pomegranate molasses and fresh mint. My partner’s lamb and chorizo burger was packed with flavour. To round things off, we sampled the light and zesty blood orange sorbet. We felt so at home at The Gloucester Old Spot that we could have whiled away the entire night, but we decided to wander home while it was still light and vowed to return soon.
